Thirsty Land Screening Date Set for Sacramento

Emmitsburg, Maryland –
The documentary film, Thirsty Land, will be screened at the California Irrigation Institute conference on Tuesday, January 30, 2PM at the Hilton Sacramento-Arden, West 2200 Harvard Street, Sacramento, CA. The FREE screening event is being sponsored by the Irrigation Association and is open to the public. Film maker, Conrad Weaver will be attending the event, and he will be accompanied by several people featured in the film. He will be available for a question and answer session following the screening.

Since it’s debut at the Water for Food Global Institute conference in Spring of 2016, Thirsty Land has been screened at universities in Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Wyoming, as well as at conventions in Orlando, FL, Las Vegas, NV, and Los Angeles, CA. It was also a featured selection at the Tallgrass Film Festival in Wichita, KS and at the Clifton Film Celebration in Clifton, VA where it was nominated for Best Documentary. In 2016, Thirsty Land also had a number of public screenings in theaters around the country, and most recently premiered on local PBS stations in California and Washington state.

“It’s been an amazing journey and I’m really thankful for the support of the Irrigation Association in the production of the film, and in getting the film promoted at screenings like this,” says Weaver. “It’s important to get this story out there, and I’m excited to be able to bring it to California.” A full listing of sponsors and supporters is available on the film’s web site.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Sponsors Thirsty Land Film

Emmitsburg, Maryland – We are excited to announce a that American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) is our newest sponsor for Thirsty Land film. Thirsty Land is a documentary film that tells the story about extreme drought, agriculture, and the water crisis in the western United States and how these challenges impact farmers, local communities, and the environment.

Filmmaker, Conrad Weaver has been traveling the country with his production crew capturing stories from farmers, ranchers, scientists, agronomists, and water experts who are dealing directly with water and drought issues.

“The story of drought needs to be told! Our global food supply and our very survival of humans depend on clean, abundant fresh water. I want to make the audience think about it every time they take a drink of water, enjoy a shower or water their lawn.”

ASABE has come on board as a Silver Sponsor of the film project, and their funds will help with finishing production of the film, as well as supporting the marketing and outreach efforts when the Thirsty Land is made available to the public.

“Population growth and more extreme weather events are creating incredible pressures on our ability to meet the fundamental needs of human life, chief among them the need for water,” says ASABE Executive Director Darrin Drollinger. “Water-resource experts, including agricultural and biological engineers, are leading the efforts to find solutions, and we must continue to develop this workforce. American Society of Agronomy Sponsors Thirsty Land Film

Emmitsburg, Maryland – Will there be enough water to survive? “Thirsty Land” is an exciting new documentary that tells the story of drought, its impact on agriculture, communities and the global food supply.

The American Society of Agronomy has come on board with Weaver as a Silver Sponsor of the film project. The funding provided by the ASA will help with production of the film, and will support the development of educational materials and resources for teachers.

“We can’t prevent drought or make it go away, but we can try to adapt to its consequences,” says Fred Vocasek, an agronomist with Servi-Tech. “Agronomists study, implement, and utilize cropping systems to store more of the water that falls on the land surface, regardless of whether it came from the sky or from underground. Then, through crop breeding or crop management we work to produce more grain or food from each drop of that water that we captured. Problem solvers don’t just appear out of nowhere. We have to inspire and nurture them. I hope that developing a student curriculum to augment A Thirsty Land will increase the number of agronomic problem solvers to help us deal with the consequences of drought.”

Vocasek is a member of the American Society of Agronomy.

Water For Food Institute Partners With Award-Winning Documentary Maker

Lincoln, Nebraska – Will there be enough water to survive? “Thirsty Land” is an exciting new documentary that tells the story of drought, its impact on agriculture, communities and the global food supply.

The Robert B. Daugherty Water For Food Institute (DWFI) at the University of Nebraska is partnering with Weaver in the production of “Thirsty Land” film.

DWFI, along with the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, have provided startup sponsorship funds for the project to move ahead.

“We are very pleased to participate in this important documentary about the challenges of drought and climate change,” said Roberto Lenton, founding executive director of the Water for Food Institute. “It supports our mission by educating people about the threats, as well as the opportunities, to achieving water and food security for generations to come.”

“I’m thrilled to be able to partner with DWFI,” says Weaver, “The University of Nebraska is well known for being a leader in research in the areas of water, hydrology, and drought mitigation.
