Thirsty Land Producer Signs Contract with NETA

Emmitsburg, Maryland –
Filmmaker, Conrad Weaver, has signed a three-year contract with The National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) to distribute the film Thirsty Land to all Public Broadcasting TV stations (PBS) around the country. The film is scheduled for release to PBS stations on October 7, 2017. Individual stations may access the film and put it onto their programming schedules for the next three years. The film will also be made available to schools and other educational institutions for the period of one year.

Weaver states, “It’s really a dream come true to get national distribution on PBS for an independent documentary film. All the hard work we’ve put into this can finally be seen by the general public – which was my original goal. Everyone consumes water, and everyone needs to take responsibility for the water we use. Thirsty Land will help people better understand the importance of managing our water supply so that future generations can have the same opportunities we enjoy today.” Weaver encourages everyone to contact your local PBS station and request an airing of the film.

Thirsty Land has been screened at universities in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Wyoming, as well as conventions put on by the film’s sponsors. It’s also had a number of public screenings in theaters around the country.

Weaver produced the film in 2015 and 2016, with the help and support of a variety of organizations and companies who are on the front lines of finding solutions for the drought and water issues in the Western United States. “I couldn’t have made this film without the support and help from the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, both at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and the Family Farm Alliance. These organizations have been great partners with me in this project,” says Weaver. Support for the film was also given by other organizations, including Teeter Irrigation, The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, The American Society of Agronomy, and others. A full listing of sponsors and supporters is available on the film’s web site.

Weaver plans on releasing the film to Video on Demand platforms, including Amazon Video, and Vimeo. These platforms will allow users to rent, and/or purchase a digital copy of the film and download it.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Sponsors Thirsty Land Film

Emmitsburg, Maryland –  We are excited to announce a that American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) is our newest sponsor for Thirsty Land film. Thirsty Land is a documentary film that tells the story about extreme drought, agriculture, and the water crisis in the western United States and how these challenges impact farmers, local communities, and the environment.

Filmmaker, Conrad Weaver has been traveling the country with his production crew capturing stories from farmers, ranchers, scientists, agronomists, and water experts who are dealing directly with water and drought issues.

“The story of drought needs to be told! Our global food supply and our very survival of humans depend on clean, abundant fresh water.  I want to make the audience think about it every time they take a drink of water, enjoy a shower or water their lawn.”

ASABE has come on board as a Silver Sponsor of the film project, and their funds will help with finishing production of the film, as well as supporting the marketing and outreach efforts when the Thirsty Land is made available to the public.

“Population growth and more extreme weather events are creating incredible pressures on our ability to meet the fundamental needs of human life, chief among them the need for water,” says ASABE Executive Director Darrin Drollinger. “Water-resource experts, including agricultural and biological engineers, are leading the efforts to find solutions, and we must continue to develop this workforce. Equally important is the need to develop an informed citizenry, because water scarcity is a shared problem that each of us, professional or not, has a role in addressing. We are grateful for this opportunity to support a project that aims to motivate all of us toward informed, constructive actions.”

We are excited that ASABE is committed to helping us be a voice to the world about the issues surrounding the water crisis in the western USA. Producing films like Thirsty Land is costly, and having organizations like the ASABE involved provides us with much-needed resources to be able to produce a high quality film that people all over the country will see.

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers joins other sponsors, including: the project’s partner,  The Water for Food Institute and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska, and others.

EMMY® Award-Winning Film Maker Begins Post-Production on Drought Film

California – Will there be enough water to survive? “Thirsty Land” is an exciting new documentary that tells the story of drought, its impact on agriculture, urban communities, and the environment.

EMMY® Award-winning* documentary filmmaker, Conrad Weaver, has wrapped up production on his new feature documentary, Thirsty Land, and has begun post-production on the film that has taken him all across the American West.

“I’m excited to be at this point in the production of our film!  The story of drought needs to be told; our global food supply and our very survival of humans depend on clean, abundant fresh water.  I want to make the audience think about the amount of water they use every time they take a drink of water, enjoy a shower, or water their lawn.  We’ve become accustomed to opening the tap, and the water is always there. But everything changes when the well runs dry.”

The Robert B. Daugherty Water For Food Institute along with the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, both at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have partnered with Weaver to produce the “Thirsty Land” film. “We are proud to share our support for “Thirsty Land,” a documentary film which will highlight the issue of drought and its wide reaching impact on agriculture, local communities, and food supplies.”

American Society of Agronomy Sponsors Thirsty Land Film

ASA Final-revisedThe American Society of Agronomy has come on board with Weaver as a Silver Sponsor of the film project. The funding provided by the ASA will help with production of the film, and will support the development of educational materials and resources for teachers.

“We can’t prevent drought or make it go away, but we can try to adapt to its consequences,” says Fred Vocasek, an agronomist with Servi-Tech. “Agronomists study, implement, and utilize cropping systems to store more of the water that falls on the land surface, regardless of whether it came from the sky or from underground. Then, through crop breeding or crop management we work to produce more grain or food from each drop of that water that we captured. Problem solvers don’t just appear out of nowhere. We have to inspire and nurture them. I hope that developing a student curriculum to augment A Thirsty Land will increase the number of agronomic problem solvers to help us deal with the consequences of drought.”

Vocasek is a member of the American Society of Agronomy.

“I’m excited that the ASA is committed to helping us be a voice to the world about the issues surrounding the water crisis in the western USA,” says Weaver, “Producing films like this is costly, and having organizations like the ASA involved provides us with much-needed resources to be able to produce a high quality film that people all over the country will see.”

AgChat Foundation Collaborates With Award-Winning Film Maker

Emmitsburg, Maryland – Will there be enough water to survive? “Thirsty Land” is an exciting new documentary that tells the story of drought, its impact on agriculture, communities and the global food supply.

Filmmaker, Conrad Weaver is already well known for his award-winning documentary “The Great American Wheat Harvest.” Working with farmers and harvesters has led him to turn the focus of his company, Conjostudios LLC, exclusively to agriculture, and now he’s focusing on the drought that’s strangling our landscape, and threatening our food supply.

“The story of drought needs to be told! Our global food supply and our very survival of humans depend on clean, abundant fresh water.  I want to make the audience think about it every time they take a drink of water, enjoy a shower or water their lawn.”

The AgChat Foundation is collaborating with Weaver as the in-kind “Fiscal Sponsor” and fundraising partner of “Thirsty Land” film.  The Foundation will provide fundraising support as a 501c3 non-profit organization, enabling Weaver to receive grants, and other tax-deductible donations for the film project.

“I’m thrilled to be able to work with AgChat Foundation,” says Weaver, “Their mission for connecting consumers to their food is completely in line with the mission of our film. The films we produce at ConjoStudios are all about helping consumers understand how agriculture works, so our collaboration is a win-win for both of us!”

Jenny Schweigert, Executive Director of AgChat Foundation says, “Participation with ConjosStudios, LLC, and the Thirsty Land film is an incredible opportunity to connect consumers to the farmers and ranchers who are producing our food, fuel and fibers. The AgChat Foundation’s overall goals are two-fold: to empower those in agriculture with the tools they need to develop meaningful conversations with consumers and to provide conduit for our industry to connect with those who are not involved with farming or ranching. Conrad has a unique eye for creatively grabbing viewers’ attention while also framing situations, such as the drought, in a way which inspires everyone to become part of the solution. We are honored to assist Conrad in bringing the dire conditions of drought to the forefront of everyone’s mind by supporting the conduit provided by Thirsty Land.”

Weaver is launching a “Crowdfunding” campaign for “Thirsty Land” on June 1 through IndieGoGo.com with a goal of raising $25,000 to help with the production of the film.
